Story

MARK CARGILL AND GREG COOK PRODUCED AND MIXED THIS TRACK. WE HAD A FABULOUSLY TALENTED CREW ON THIS LATIN BEAT INSPIRATIONAL SONG. NORMA OROZCO TRANSLATED THE CHORUS INTO SPANISH FOR US AND COACHED MY SPANISH PRONUNCIATION IN THE STUDIO.  CHERYL MCDOWELL-ROOKS AND MR. W GAVE US SOME SWEET NEAT BACKGROUND VOCALS; DAVID JACKSON PROVIDED THE JUST RIGHT CHARISMATIC PERCUSSION GROOVE, AND CAROL CHAIKIN CHARMED US WITH HER PLAYFUL FLUTE PERFORMANCE. THIS SONG IS SUCH A DELIGHT THANKS TO ALL THEIR TALENTS. ENJOY! AND IF YOU LOVE TO DANCE...EVEN BETTER ; D

Story

I found a little seed of a song that I had recorded a cappella a while back with the one line melody and hook I LOVE YOUR FACE. I shared it with Mark Cargill and Greg Cook and they created a beautiful musical bed. Back at home, I sashayed around my home studio to their track and improvised more lyrics and verse melody. Back in Cargill's studio we collaborated on more lyrics and production ideas. This song is the result. I LOVE this song! I hope you do to. Cheryl McDowell-Rook came into  the studio and added her beautiful, luxurious voice for background vocals. The dashing Andrew Carney  added his ever top-notch trumpet. Thank you, guys! I'm very fortunate to have your talents on this album.

Lyrics

I Love Your Face

(Copyright 2011) Janelle Donovan,Mark Cargill & Gregory Cook

Oh I just love your face

 every twinkle every crinkle

that makes you who you are

In your eyes my Northern star I see

  I love your face

 I love your face

Oh I just love your face

Through the galleries of time

nothing could I find

(more chic)

 your profile tres sublime

 I love your face

I love your face

At the Met or at Louvre

The Hermitage in old Saint Pete’s

 You got them beat

 I just love your face

I hang your portrait in my heart

My dearest work of art

The physiognomy

 Looking back at me

No earthly hand could paint

I love your face

I love your face

INSTRUMENTAL SOLO

At the Met or at Louvre

There’s nothing there

that moves me like you do

I just love your face

I hang your portrait in my heart

My dearest work of art

The physiognomy

 Looking back at me

No earthly hand could paint

I love your face

I love your face

(Outro)

Paint and marble, bronze and gold

stories young stories old

nothing could compare to you my dear

Love your kisser

Love your pout

That’s what love is all about

Love your face from ear to ear

Love for you I hold so dear...

Story

FUN is the key note to this song. The concept for it was born from summertime fun — the Saratoga Race Track , Saratoga Performing Arts Center, all the hot blues and jazz clubs, tasty restaurants, the Saratoga County Fair!Love it! AND this is the community where my friend, co-writer and producer,Tony Perrino, with whom I started some concepts of this song, has his home and studio. So I have gotten to know Saratoga Springs, in Upstate New York, very well.

Tony Perrino in his studio @Saratoga.com

The recording of this song was rich with fun, laughs, outrageously great musicians & producers (Mark Cargill & Greg Cook). The song is introduced by one of my all time favorite trumpet players, Andrew Carney. He adds a crazy cool "horse whinny" which always makes me smile. The wild wonderful lady on sax is Carol Chaikin; she had us bopping. The always lovely & lyrical Cheryl McDowell-Rooks and the debonair Mr. W. added some great back-up vocals. Mr. W is the dapper "talker". "Oh, yeah!" The three of us joined voices to create the "people-at-a-party" chatter. Spontaneity plus! I laughed so hard I almost fell off my stool. Mark Cargill, co-writer/producer, added some tasty fiddle parts, and Greg Cook (co-writer/producer) contributed the cool, swinging contrast on the keyboard. So let yourself go, my dears, and ENJOY ENJOY this summertime fun song!

Story

My collaborators/producers, Mark Cargill & Greg Cook, decided  we should record this song live and I'm so glad they did. It was a lot of fun and fit the mood of the song. Harvey Estrada played bass, Tim Kobza played guitar & Stephen Stevens played drums. I love the firm snap Stephen gives to intro the song. We quickly got into a nice easy roll. The ever lovely songstress, Cheryl McDowell Rooks, and the mellifluous Mr. W, provided tasty background vocals.

The lyrics had been germinating with me since my trip to #Seattle where I got to hear some phenomenal singer/songwriters @JazzAlley and the blues club Highway 99. I was inspired. I think many of us could identify with this woman's predicament and her decision. I like the humor in it. Enjoy my friends.

Lyrics

HEARTACHE is a LUXURY

Copyright 2011

Janelle Donovan, Mark Cargill & Greg Cook

heartache is a luxury

she can not afford

though half a pound of crystal tears

came knocking at her door

she puts the children into bed

and cleans the house once more

and whispers to herself

 “heartache is a luxury

 i can not afford”

heartache is a luxury

for the leisure crowd

with precious time to spend on tears

Or was she just too proud?

Time to get the children up and fed

His letter goes ignored

 cause heartache is a luxury

she can not afford

(He ran out of credit.)

she thinks about the first time

 he was gone

now the cost comes sadly

  multiplied (Oh, well)

Her good friends call her, tell her not to worry, tell her he’s sorry,

ask her how she’s feeling, what she’s needing and she replies with a sigh: (Help me out here.)

Instrumental solo

his love is not a measure of my worth

I know there’s something better on this big earth

heartache is a luxury

 I can not afford

through half a pound of cheap tear drops

 came knocking at my door

have to put my children before

 all that

 they deserve more

so heartache is a luxury

 I can not afford

Spoken word: “Hmm, pay electricity or buy food, hmm, I don’t know.outta dough. checking my pockets looking for a twenty. Aw, I got my kids. they’re plenty. Hmmm. That pot used to have a lot more pennies. We’ll get through. I know how to make do.”

I know there’s more. I know there’s more. “What’s on my mind?” You’re so kind to ask what’s on my mind. Not for me.

You’re so kind to ask what’s on my mind. Heartache I can not afford. To ask what’s on my mind. Heartache is a luxury.

YOU ARE THE ONE Written and performed by: Janelle Donovan, Mark Cargill, Greg Cook  Copyright 2011

I see you looking at me

I feel your desire

Don’t play shy, honey

You’re my man

You know you put me on fire

Baby, you’re the one

The only one for me

 You are the one

You know that’s guaranteed

Make me late for work in the morning

Wake me up at night

I’m feeling that way for you

You are feeling that way too

Kiss me like you want me, baby

i’ll give it back to you

Baby, you’re the one

The only one for me

You are the one

You know that’s guaranteed

When I’m late for work in the morning

If you Wake me up at night

 what you do to satisfy

Makes everything all right

‘Cause you’re the one, oh-oh

You are the one

 solo

 Baby, you’re the one

The only one for me

Baby, you’re the one

You know that’s guaranteed

When I’m late for work in the morning

If you Wake me up at night

 what you do to satisfy

Makes everything all right

I see you looking at me

as silk floats to the floor

I know what you want to give me

I want to give you more

 Baby, you’re the one

The only one for me

 you are the one

The one I need

make me late in the morning

Wake me up at night

what you do to satisfy me

Makes everything right ... right

‘Cause you’re the one, oh-oh

You are the one

 YOU ARE THE ONE

Story

Do you hear that wailing blues you-done-me -wrong song on our player? In cooperation with Peter Corrigan of Peterenvy Muisc, we have just launched a digital single from the Blues Noir hit CD - What I Am. The song is "One Red Rose", written by Peter. Janelle Donovan and Peter sing on it (see bio reviews), Peter and Paul Bricso perform steamin' guitar solos, and Tony Perrino plays a smokin' Hammond B3 organ and produces at the same time, by golly! So go on treat yourself to a  delicious twist on an age old story. Click here!

Lyrics

Peter Corrigan, front man for Blues Noir wrote this awesome song. I had the privilege of recording the female part in Tony Perrino's studio. Tony was producer and Hammond B3 player for their album. While working in LA with Mark Cargill and Greg Cook, we decided we wanted to add this song to our upcoming album and do a little revisit on it to fit the mood of my album. We ran it by Peter who was happy about the match up. Mr. W and Ms. Cheryl McDowell-Rooks added their splendid background vocals. This is one of only two songs that I didn't write that I wanted on this CD. Enjoy. I mean like really. Dig it.

Story

This song, Ev'ry Day, has had a wonderful evolution. I cut one version in Saratoga NY with Tony Perrino and Joe Mele. I loved that version. Still do. Then I moved to the LA area and started writing with Mark Cargill and Greg Cook who helped me put another spin on it including some awesome saxophone work by Rastine Calhoun. We named that version ( Searching Searching) Ev'ry Day.  Then, just for fun, Mark, Greg and I did a dance mix we call Ev'ry Day ( Dance with Me). I have to move whenever I hear it.  It is a song that continues to be fun and flexible Ev'ry Day.

Lyrics

(Searching, searching) EVE’RY DAY

Janelle Donovan, Mark Cargill, Greg Cook, Tony Perrino & Joe Mele © TONErecords 2011

My heart beats your name ev’ry day

I know that sounds fantastical - this side of fanciful

To your pragmatic ear it may hold no sway

But my heart beats your name ev’ry day

My feet walk these roads ev’ry day

Pounding out those daily deeds

Taking care of wants and needs

I’m traveling to your side so far away

And my heart beats your name ev’ry day

It’s useless, ‘cause I’ve tried To maintain some control

Like tryin’ to get an iron grip On the light that guides my soul

My eyes see these miles ev’ry day

Fast and slow beneath my feet

Passing in a changing beat

I’m traveling to your side come what may

And my heart beats your name ev’ry day

Instrumental Solo

It’s useless, ‘cause I’ve tried to maintain some control

Like trying to get an iron grip on the light that guides my soul

My arms reach for you ev’ry day,

Searching searching  ev’ry where.

I’m alone when you’re not there.

Don’t care what other people say

Cause my heart beats your name ev’ry day

My heart beats your name ev’ry day

I know that sounds fantastical  just this side of fanciful

To your pragmatic ear It may hold no sway

But my heart beats your name ev’ry day

But my heart beats your name ev’ry day

 Outro

My feet walk these roads ev’ry day

Pounding out those daily deeds

Taking care of wants and needs

I’m trav’ling to your side come what may

And my heart beats your name ev’ry day

My eyes see these miles ev’ry day

Fast and slow beneath my feet

Passing in a changing beat

I’m trav’ling to your side so far away

And my heart beats your name ev’ry day

Sax solo out

Story

This song is not jazz- more like rock-a-billy - and yet it is jazzy in a rock-a-billy kinda way. My dad was from Manhattan and my mom a Southern Belle, so musically I cross back and forth with ease. Hey, Ray Chales, Sting, Norah Joens & Bonnie Raitt did it so I am in good company.I wrote with Mark Cargill & Greg Cook what I hope is a rallying cry to put on some 'tude! Attitude ; D We are a resilient nation and a generous, creative people. It is exciting to see our progress and I believe many other nations in our world can also "Get Back Their Rock & Roll!" So let's do it together folks."You can do it!" Pas peur!

GOTTA RUN IN MY STOCKING

@ JANELLE DONOVAN, MARK CARGILL, GREG COOK 2011

GOTTA RUN IN MY STOCKING

TANGLE IN MY HAIR

 LOOKING ALL AROUND ME

 TROUBLE EVERYWHERE

IF I KEEP MY FEET ON THE PATH

STRAIGHT TRACK

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL BE BACK

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL GET BACK MY ROCK & ROLL

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL GET BACK MY ROCK & ROLL

GOTTA RUN IN MY STOCKING

CAR JUST BIT THE DUST

GOT TO GET WORK SOMEHOW

GOTTA TAKE THE BUS

IF I KEEP MY FEET ON THE PATH

STRAIGHT TRACK

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL ADJUST

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I'LL GET BACK MY ROCK & ROLL

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL GET BACK MY ROCK & ROLL

GOTTA RUN IN MY STOCKING

 POCKET FULL OF HOLES

THINGS AINT BEEN THIS BAD

 SINCE THE OLD DUST BOWL

IF I KEEP MY FEET ON THE PATH

STRAIGHT TRACK

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

  I’LL BE COMING BACK

WITH A RUN IN MY STOCKING

I’LL GET BACK MY STROLL

Carol Chaikin walked into the studio that day, a gentle, charming, friendly soul. Demure I would say. She stepped into the recording room at Mark Cargill's studio and rocked out! She blew the house down. This is a snippet of her performance. ENJOY!
