Story

We used to carol in our neighborhood when we were kids. One of my all time favorites to share was Good King Wenceslas. He always sounded like such a great guy to me. Someone to emulate. It is rumored that the original tune was an old English drinking song! Which is why we get such a catchy melody. I thought it would be fun to do a jazz version and with my LA producers Mark Cargill & Greg Cook; we gave it a whirl. Andrew Carney joined us and added some terrific trumpet licks. I enjoy this version very much and feel like it bounces me along to a happier more positive attitude. Enjoy!

GOOD KING WENCESLAS ( AKA GOOD KING JAZZ MAN)

A traditional song with original additional lyrics by Janelle Donovan; original additional music, and arrangement by Janelle Donovan, Mark Cargill, Andrew Carney, and Greg Cook      Copyright 2010 TONErecords from CD “Christmas Eyes”

Good King Wenceslas looked out, On the Feast of Stephen

When the snow lay round about, Deep and crisp and even

Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel

When a poor man came in sight, Gath’ring winter fuel (Mmmm)

Hither page and stand by me, If thou knows’t tell me

Yonder fella who is he, Where and what his dwelling?

Sire he lives a a good league hence, Underneath the mountain

Right beside the forest fence,By Saint Agnes Fountain (In our neighborhood...)

So! Bring me flesh and bring me wine; Bring me pine logs hither

Thou and I will see him dine, When we bring them thither

Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together

Through the rude winds wild lament, And the bitter weather... in your heart, we can do our part...

Sire the night is darker now, And the wind grows colder

Fails my heart I know not how, I can go no longer

Mark my footsteps my good friend, Tread thou in them boldly

Thou shalt find the winter’s rage, Freeze thy blood less coldly (Be a good guy, Christmas good guy)

In his master’s steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted

Heat was in the very sod, Where the Saint had printed

Therefore all you folks be sure, Wealth or rank possessing

You who would now help the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing in your heart, I know you can do you part

(Scatting)

Good King Wenceslas took a look around the hood, whether he could do some good

 Patron Saint of Czechoslovakia   Mmmm

Good King Wenceslas went out...

Lyrics

CHRISTMAS EYES

Copyright TONErecords

What do I want for Christmas?

You ask me with a frown

And I can see the money’s got you down

So you try to explain it

As if it were your fault

Carrying that burden must be so cold

People all around us

Are struggling just the same

What if for this moment

We left out all the blame?

I love your Christmas eyes.

They are my treasure

The truest light on earth,

 I’ve ever known

And the steady fire that I find there

Warms our little home

What is it about Christmas

That we feel our greatest needs?

Does it open up our heart and plant a seed?

There’s no way to explain it

How that seed grows into love

Lifting up our burdens

In ways we’d never dreamed of

People all around us

Are searching for those ways

That’s why I took your hands in mine

And took the time to say...

Chorus repeat

I love your Christmas eyes.

They are my treasure

The truest light on earth,

 I’ve ever known

And the steady fire that I find there

Warms this little home

Within your Christmas eyes

I find the measure

Of all the good

That we’ve been blessed to know

And the loving sparkle

 That I find there

Shines with an angel glow

And a star from long ago

Gives me light to see

He sent you here for me

So let your Christmas eyes

 Celebrate our life

let them shine,

shine tonight!

Story

WE were deeply inspired to express another musical dimension of this powerful yet simple song. WE wrote some new lyrics and some new musical material. Whenever I sang this song at Howe Caverns for the Christmas Show 200 feet under the earth in a large cavern, the album always sold out. The acoustics were phenomenal in the cavern and I needed no mic or PA. I loved that gig! Thanks Joe and Kathy Condon!

MY friend Maya wants a dolly

She thinks that would make her jolly

Ivan wants a fire hose

Fire truck and fire clothes

Carlos wants a hundred books

Mae Ling wants some fishing hooks

Those are nice as you can see

But what I want won’t be under the tree !

Cause I’ll be...

Dancing ‘round the tree with Santa

He is such a nimble fella

heel toe, fast slow,

Pick ‘em up and here we go

Waltz saltza break and pop

We will dance until I drop

I hope the music never stops!

 Dancing ‘round with Santa

Ho-HO what do you know?

Rudolph likes to tippy -toe

Hey hEY the elves all say

 Frosty’s into fine ballet

He’ll be... dancing ‘round the tree with Santa

HE is such a handsome fella

jaunty hat

not too fat

red suit

he’s so cute

You go your way

I’ll go mine

We’ll get there in tinsel time

By Christmas Eve we’ll all feel fine

Dancing ‘round with Santa

Brother wants paint and easel

Sister wants a varmint weasel

Mommy wants to take a nappy

Daddy wants to make mom happy

Grandma says its time for bed

So I lay down my little head

But i know where I’l be soon

Rockin’ beneath the Christmas moon

Dancing ‘round the tree with Santa

He is such a nimble fella

heel toe, fast slow,

Pick ‘em up and here we go

Waltz saltza break and pop

We will dance until I drop

I hope the music never stops!

 Dancing ‘round with Santa

Ha ha a big hurrah

Santa likes to do the samba

Hee-hee what do you see

auntie learned to do the shimmie

My my well I never

Auntie learned to do the shiver

Dancing ‘round the tree with Santa

He is such a handsome fella

jaunty hat

not too fat

Soft /big red suit

he’s so cute

You go your way

I’ll go mine

We’ll get there in tinsel time

By Christmas Eve we’ll all feel fine

Dancing ‘round with Santa

Story

Our original recording of this cherished #Christmas classic was arranged & performed by Tony Perrino, Joe Mele & myself. To my ears it is a magical fusion of classic , rock & #jazz. We added original musical bridges & lyrics which you can hear more clearly in the vocal recording.I moved to LA & started writing with Mark Cargill & Greg Cook. I wanted to expand the original album & asked Mark Cargill to weave a violin solo into Silent Night. The result is a wonderful & internationally  popular instrumental beauty. Wishing you all peace on earth & good will to all.
